What is Hail Damage?
Hail is a natural catastrophic event that causes serious damage to residential and commercial properties. Considering that hail falls from the sky above, roofing systems are the most susceptible to hail damage. When storms enter an area with strong directional winds, siding and windows and can be damaged. There are several states that are affected more often by hail damage than others. The problem is not limited to only those states - any area can be affected by a hailstorm. History tells us that hailstorms typically begin around the month of May and continue through the Spring and Summer seasons. People living in the affected areas should stay out of hailstorms when they occur. Besides causing severe damage to properties, hail can also cause serious injuries to people and animals out of reach from cover. It can be very dangerous to be outside during a hailstorm.
How Do You Identify Hail Damage?
Hail can damage properties in different ways depending on the condition of the building materials and how strong the conditions of the storm are (wind, storm direction, amount of time, hail size, etc.). For large hail events (i.e., 2.25 inch and greater), it can be very obvious to spot hail bruising, and sometimes punctures, to the roofing system. Other events can consist of smaller hail where it becomes difficult to identify the damage. Smaller hail as well as large hail on new, more durable roofing systems, can take time to show up due to the nature of the roofing shingle protection. In these events, it takes several rain showers in combination with sunshine to present the hail bruising to the shingles. That’s why it can be difficult to argue damage to an Insurance Company. If you want to ensure your hail damage claim is properly documented and paid for, it is a good idea to hire a Public Adjuster. It’s important to act as soon as possible if you feel your property was subjected to a hail storm; if you wait too long to report hail damages, depending on your insurance policy conditions, you may not be able to claim the damage.
Consider a Property Damage Inspection
If you become aware that your residential home or business property may have suffered damage from a recent hail storm, be sure to call a licensed Public Adjuster to represent your interests on the claim. It’s important to keep in mind that your Insurance will hire their own adjuster to represent their financial interests on the claim; therefore, you might as well hire your own Adjuster to protect yours. If you notice an influx of Roofing Salesmen knocking at your door, they will attempt to persuade you to let them represent you on your claim – they are not licensed to do so. In many states, it is illegal for a roofing specialist to represent your interests on the claim. You need to hire a licensed Public Adjuster who knows what they are doing to properly represent your hail claim.
Roof Hail Damage
The roof is the portion of a home or business that suffers to most damage caused by hail. When a roof is damaged by hail, the shingles become bruised, cracked or even punctured. This allows water to begin entering the building over time. Even with a simple bruise with no cracking to the fiberglass matting, hail bruises will be subjected to rain, wind and heat which eventually cracks the matting and allows rain water to enter. If the damage is not dealt with in a timely fashion, then other parts of the roof will also deteriorate over time. You should never assume that your roof was not damaged from hail because you haven’t noticed any interior leaking. As previously mentioned, if you wait too long to act after a hailstorm, your Insurance Company will likely try to deny your claim for failure to abide by your policy conditions to report damages in a reasonable amount of time.
